• GLObiotic is recombinant bacteria expressing glyoxalase 3 (Glo3).
• Glyoxalases detoxify methylglyoxal, a noxious metabolite produced by gut microflora.
• Methylglyoxal impairs intestinal barrier function e.g. in irritable bowel syndrome [1] and has been linked to autism [2].
• Methylglyoxal is one of the most potent electrophilic metabolites that non-enzymatically modifies proteins and nucleic acids [3].
• Gut-derived methylglyoxal has been shown to affect lifespan in model organisms [4].
