A recombinant probiotic expressing a glyoxalase enzyme to improve gut fitness.
</aside>
🟥 Description
- GLObiotic is recombinant bacteria expressing glyoxalase 3 (Glo3).
- Glyoxalases detoxify methylglyoxal, a noxious metabolite produced by gut microflora.
- Methylglyoxal impairs intestinal barrier function e.g. in irritable bowel syndrome [1] and has been linked to autism [2].
- Methylglyoxal is one of the most potent electrophilic metabolites that non-enzymatically modifies proteins and nucleic acids [3].
- Gut-derived methylglyoxal has been shown to affect lifespan in model organisms [4].
